TEXTURES: Patty Brown and Ileen Kaplan

“Textures,” a show of new work by gallery artists Patricia Brown and Ileen Kaplan will be in the main gallery at State of the Art during September. A reception for the artists will be held Friday, September 6, 5-8pm.

Brown's work originates from paint rags she used over the years; she says: “My old splattered, smudged, and torn paint rags contain a beauty that records years of my studio practice.  Now, these cleaning cloths are my teachers - as I stitch, I follow each rag’s texture and design.  In honoring the formation of each remnant, I find beauty in what would ordinarily be discarded.”

Kaplan says her paintings are both intuitive and precise.  “I am always weighing the composition, balancing the lights and darks and choosing the colors carefully. Yet spontaneity plays an important role in my work. It is always about feeling, emotionally, of course, but physically as well. That’s why texture is so exciting to me. One of my favorite comments about my work was that the brushstrokes were ‘delicious.’ I want my paintings to feel creamy, crunchy, gooey, tasty, delicious. A feast for the eyes and all of the senses.”
