Message from the juror Laurie Snyder:
Burning down the house. Talking Heads 1983
I don’t wanna hurt nobody
Somethings sure can sweep me off my feet
Something is out of the ordinary.
I am an ordinary gal….burning down the house.
And well you might ask, what am I looking for?
And who am I to make these selections.
I am Laurie Snyder, retired photography educator and photographic artist. I taught for more than 30 years: at TC3, Ithaca College, Cornell, Syracuse University, Anderson Ranch and finally for 21 years at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
Many people in this room are familiar faces!
I am always looking for images that evoke another layer of meaning: a mood, a spirit, or even a rhythm, or tone. I am also interested in images that are the tip of the iceberg of long committed investigations. Every image in this exhibit is worthy of commendation – it is each artist’s thoughtful selection. And I respect that process. Yet I was asked to choose and identify some images that spoke out to me.Either the image was entirely fresh to my eyes or it vibrated with its history.
